"Kicked out of surgery for just being out of..."

About: Awburn House Medical Practice

I Had been with Awburn House surgery for 31 years, I moved house as was living with parents and got my own place now. The catchment area I'm told runs to Hattersley round about. I live what is about a 3minute walk away from there, but told I can no longer attend the surgery. According to the NHS website, if a doctor is prepared to see you even though you are out of the area, they can send a form off to say they are prepared to do so.

Patient choice of GP practices

Since January 5 2015, all GP practices in England have been free to register new patients who live outside their practice boundary area.

This means you can register with a GP practice somewhere that's more convenient for you, such as a practice near your work or closer to your children’s schools. This will give you greater choice and aims to improve the quality of access to GP services. Use the Services near you facility to find out what people say about a GP practice.

I have phoned up a couple of times, the first time the receptionist said she would get the doctor to ring me which didn't happen, the next time I phoned to see why the doctor hadn't phoned she and asked if she could get him to phone. She just said sorry your out of the catchment area and there is nothing we can do about it.

On the website it doesn't even tell you where the catchment area is. I wouldn't mind, according to my council tax form I'm classed as mottram. So wondering how I could not fall under the catchment. I'm also part way through treatment and on the sick. My sick note runs out next week but no doctors to treat me.

Thank you for your comments.

We realise that you may not feel happy about having to change your doctor but we are unable to visit outside of our catchment area which means we are unable to provide you with a complete package of care.

However, we are concerned that you do not have a doctor as it is practice policy to write to any patient who moves out of the practice area advising them to find a new GP within 28 days.

This would give the patient plenty of time to complete their registration with their new GP before they are removed from our practice list.

If this did not happen please contact the surgery so we can investigate why this did not happen.

Thank you

Mrs G Graham

Practice Manager
