"Ward 231 Neurology ward"

About: Royal Stoke University Hospital

The Neurology ward 231 was way too hot in temperature and was very uncomfortable. Please turn the heating down a bit. It was absolutely baking. Even my relatives I had with me and another patient in the same bay with me said this too so I am not on my own. We did open a window but it was still too hot so could do with turning down to a more sensible level as it is much easier to keep warm than it is to keep cool.

I found the multi-bed bay difficult as a wheelchair user due to space issues of less space for me to move around in my wheelchair than a single room that there is meant to be on these supposed-new wards and have had in other hospitals that have cared for me in the past. I also found, as a patient with body temperature control issues from my medical condition and medications the temperature impossible to get controlled and comfortable for me as an individual due to sharing with others and feel people like me with these medical needs should be allowed our own room as there are quite a few single rooms on this ward and other wards within your hospital specifically for this purpose, not just infectious diseases, and in this day and age patients as individuals need and deserve care tailored to their needs, including a single room as standard in these new-build hospitals. Time to modernise and build more single rooms otherwise to achieve this, which can certainly be done as I have studied it and even written my own research paper on this very topic as an academic in this field.

NHS patients should not be treated differently or discriminated against, due to financial ability/inability, by being given less care than their private counterparts - this includes the multi-bed bay sharing vs single rooms. I really sincerely hope you look into this seriously too.

I am sorry to read of your unsatisfactory experience during your stay on Ward 231. The temperature on all of the wards is thermostatically controlled and is set to a minimum of 19 degrees Centigrade to maintain a comfortable ambient temperature, however we appreciate that, due to personal preference, it would be impossible to be able to get the temperature perfect for each individual patient.

With regards to your observations about the side-rooms, the main building of the hospital was built under specifications laid out by clinicians who requested a mixture of 3-4 bedded bays and side rooms. There is 50:50 split of 3-4 bedded bays and single side-rooms in the main building; and the side-rooms are primarily allocated according to clinical need.

Feedback informs us that many of our patients prefer the company of others whilst in hospital so it is important to have a mixture of bays and side rooms.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback

With best wishes
