"My dad's care"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Ear, Nose & Throat

(as a relative),

My dad is in ninewells has been since having a laryngectomy. When I called about 10am I was told that he had been moved to a side room but was still getting watched and looked after, he was up and sitting in his chair. Now I arrived at 3. 45 to visit and found my dad in his side room still in his chair to be told he been there since 6am, the TV in his room is broken and no other TV in room. We asked for him to be moved back to his bed as he was wanting a sleep and was shattered. Had to ask for another TV to be brought in for him. Which when I called at 7pm nothing had been done. Left him with my tablet with Now tv and Netflix. He was drifting in and out of sleep within 10 mins of being back in bed. I know the nurses/doctors want him up and moving about but come on have some compassion about it. Major operation left in chair no TV, feel like he been put in there to help himself to cope but there is coping and then there is wrong.

Dear "Wind22"

I am sorry that you feel there has been a lack of understanding shown to your father’s needs following his laryngectomy. The nursing team is extremely concerned to hear this and the Senior Charge Nurse would welcome an opportunity to discuss your concerns directly, should you wish to contact her.

Thank you for bringing this matter to my attention.

Kind regards.

Lesley Forsyth

Update posted by Wind22 (a relative)

My response is that in past few days we have seen an improvement in his care and any issues myself and my sister are dealing with them with the staff on duty. Also calling twice a day to make sure he is OK. He now has a TV and not being left unattended in his chair for so long. My sister is in every day and in contact with the doctors and I go in every couple of days but kept informed by my sister with what's going on.
