"Oncology Department"

About: Lincoln County Hospital

My mum regularly uses the oncology dept for her cancer treatment weekly and has previously been treated in other oncology departments in different hospitals.

On every single one of her appointments at Lincoln, her treatment has never been on time, for example she had a 12 o’clock appointment for chemo and wasn’t seen by a nurse until two hours later, and when she does eventually get seen her chemo drug is always late from the pharmacy, which creates another unnecessary delay

On one visit the nurse forgot to order her anti sickness tablets and told her she would be fine without them!

In her visits to other hospitals she has the same nurse for the entirety of her appointment, but at Lincoln she has a different nurse for each separate task which creates delays and confusion between staff and leaves my mum feeling uncared for throughout an already stressful experience, and she is not allowed to have any one to accompany her.

On another occasion she called before her treatment to see if her bloods were ok for treatment and was told they were and to come for her chemo, only for her to get to the hospital (after a 40min journey) to be told her bloods were actually not ok and she couldn’t have chemo.

My mum has stage 4 cancer and we are both disgusted by some of the events that have occurred and feel powerless to change anything, but wanted to make you aware that some of the systems or management needs to improve.

My mum is quite a strong lady, but she should not have had to experience this and we do not want someone else to have to also go through this. It has made her feel helpless and worthless at times.

As the matron for the Oncology at ULHT I am genuinely very upset that this has been your mother’s experience and I am truly very sorry that this has happened. I would like to apologise for the;

· negative experience that you mother has had

· delays in your mother’s appointment time

· delays with chemotherapy administration

· delay with anti-sickness administration

· being told that her bloods were not ok to have chemo and then to have travel home again.

· Having different nurses on each occasion

I would also like to thank you for taking the time to express your upset and to advocate for your mother.

I would be really keen to meet with you and your mother and offer some assistance in making your mother’s future appointments and ensure that her care experience is more positive.

There are a number of changes going on within oncology and I would like to share these with you.

Please be assured that we will take your concerns very seriously and address them. I shall share your comments with my teams to ensure that they are all aware of your mother’s experience and how she has felt as a result of it.

Again thank you for sharing your mother’s experience and please do get in touch so that we can discuss this further, 01522 512512 and ask switchboard to bleep me.

Kindest regards,

Marie Beck, Matron for Haematology and Oncology
