"Accident and emergency guesswork"

About: Queen Alexandra Hospital / Accident and emergency

Really disappointed with the way I was treated in A&E today. I was sent to A&E at my doctors request first thing this morning as my doctor having looked at an injury I had sustained to my finger a few weeks before Christmas was sure due to swelling, protruding knuckle and lack of movement was either dislocated or had been dislocated with chipped bone or break and is not healing so required an x-ray ASAP. My doctor assured me as a finger joint injury even though it happened outside the usual two weeks A&E would definitely still x-ray it and she didn’t want me waiting two weeks which would be the case if requested through my GP. On arrival the navigation nurse told me they probably wouldn’t do anything as over two weeks regardless of injury, I was then sent to the next stage of the process to see the nurse practitioner who looked at my finger and obviously had x ray vision as she could tell me that it was a break that had probably healed wrong and there was nothing they could do so to go back to my GP for an x ray through them. Funny enough I had a nurse practitioner last year at A&E who told me my severe neck pain I had was where I had slept awkward and to go home, I insisted on seeing a doctor which I waited four hours for and then was told it was tortacollis and would go away within 3 weeks , it didn’t, I went private, had a scan where they found two prolapse discs in my neck! Forgive me but I know hospitals are under pressure but once again I have been fobbed off and pushed from pillar to post between my GP and A&E, both guessing and not wanting to take the cost of an x-ray! No doubt it will be another case of having to go private just to get an x-ray and treatment! No wonder our NHS just doesn’t work anymore, too much red tape and different departments worrying about their budgets! Let’s hope I’ve not had another mis diagnosis from the nurse with the x-ray vision!
