"Unhappy staff make for unhappy patients"

About: Victoria Hospital / Admissions Unit 1 (Emergency Medical) Victoria Hospital / General Medicine

(as a relative),

My Parent was admitted to ward 52  where we can't praise the staff and doctors enough; caring, friendly and compassionate.

My other parent was admitted to ADM1 a few months later, where the staff were friendly and caring however 1 day the buzzer was not at hand and as my parent could not reach the buzzer or attract anyone's attention, my parent had to crawl to the toilet and back to bed.

My parent was then transferred to a ward where the staff were unfriendly, overworked and under a lot of pressure.  My parent's meal slips went missing and one day at 1.45 had to ask if lunch was on way, soup was brought, which hadn't been ordered and when told that was not what was ordered was told - just eat it, another day again around 2pm had to ask for lunch, fish and chips had been ordered which was then brought - stone cold.  The staff were unfriendly, unhappy and overworked.

One day I stood at the nurses desk looking for an update on my parent and was totally ignored.  Unhappy staff make for unhappy patients.  On the whole  99% of staff at the Hospital do a very good job under the pressure  the government has put them under and it is the minority that attract criticism.

I hope my parent never needs to return to this ward.

Dear uncommunicative

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your mother's experiences in hospital; good and bad. Your positive comments about ward 52 have been passed on.

It was really sad to read about your mother's subsequent experiences and I have been contacted by the Head of Nursing who would very much like the opportunity to speak to you directly so that she can discuss this in a bit more detail. What you describe is not what we want for patients and their families and we are keen to make sure that your feedback is directed appropriately.

It would be helpful if you would contact me directly so that we can follow up o your comments. My direct umber is 01592 648154.

Regards

Louise
