"very good"

About: Kettering General Hospital

What I liked

My husband was transfered to Kettering, via A&E after being seen by our local GP. He was diagnosed with suspected pneumonia and swine flu.

The assessment nurse was very disinterested and not a lot of help so immediately I though "Oh here we go, this is going to be awful" After that he was seen really quickly and taken into a private side room which I thought was very good and was exceptionally clean.

The staff were fantastic and he had blood tests and chest x-rays done within an hour of arriving. The nurses frequently checked on him and we were regularly updated as to his treatment and what would be happening next. The ward he was placed on was incredibly clean and the nursing staff were very helpful. I was always able to find the nurse looking after him and she was very approachable and knowledgeable about what would be happening with his treatment. The health care assistants who bought him water etc were lovely and very helpful.

So many people are quick to criticise the hospitals, yes there are aspects that are not great and some of the nursing staff and doctors attitudes to patients leave a lot to be desired but this is not indicative of everyone who works for the NHS. They do a very difficult job with very little resources and on this occasion I would like to thank Kettering Hospital for all their help in getting my husband well again.

What could be improved

Attitude of the assessment nurse could have been a little better but hardly a major problem

Thank you for your kind words about our hospital, it was encouraging to hear that you felt your husband received a high standard of care which was delivered with dignity and respect.

Over the past 18 months the medicine clinical management team have emphasised the need for doctors and nurses to ensure patients feel informed about their treatment and understand their diagnosis. It is very pleasing to hear staff have embraced the training and put their skills into practice.

I was sorry to hear your initial impression of the Accident and Emergency department was not what you would have expected and I have spoken to the Lead Nurse in Accident & Emergency, regarding the comment you made about the assessment nurse. I will ensure your thanks is communicated to the all the staff who looked after your husband during his stay, as I am sure they will be pleased to hear your feedback.

We are always grateful to receive comments about the services we provide and I am pleased you and your husband were happy with the quality of care he received throughout his stay. It is always encouraging to know where as a Trust and department we are doing well.
