"the majority was awful"

About: Southmead Hospital

What I liked

the midwife i had in the delivery suite was kind caring and supportive and the only one she didnt judge me for being a young mum at 18 and she went over her shift so she could deliever my daughter.

What could be improved

i went in to be induced with my first baby and i was hten told i was in the early stages of labour which was fine so i settled down for the night my partner left then my waters broke the midwife came in gave me a pad put some tissue on top of the fluid on the floor and left me to sort myself out.

after the midwife came back they realised there was meconium in my fluid so i was placed on monitors which was fine after a while my contractions came very fast i asked for some entinox and was refused by the midwife who seemed annoyed by my request and was given paracetomol iwas then told the delievery suite was full and i might have to give birth on the ward which scared me even more.

after the shift change the new midwife seemed nice a tfirst and brought me the enitnox i was then told i needed to go up to the delivery suite but still no room but they needed my bed for somebody else and was put in the day room where there were 3 other couples waiting and i was crying and on the gas and air so much for being treated with dignity .

once i got up onto the delivery suite the new midwife i had was lovely and helped me through my labour with the help of an epidural. my daugter was stuck so i had an episiotomy and they stiched me up but i was still bleeding my partener looked worried aswell as my sister i was asking what was going on and none would tell mthen 2 more staff came in and i was then stiched up properly however i lost a lot of blood. i was obviously very stressed by the situation as none told me what was happpening throughout that time i was then left with no one coming to help me clean myself up my sister had to help[ me get in the bath i was left in the room with all the mess . so i would not recomend this hospital borth is scary enough as it is without bad attitude of staff and no dignity .

Dear 12060709 thank you for you comments about the Maternity Services at Southmead Hospital. I am pleased that you found the midwife in the delivery suite so supportive.

I was however concerned to read the comments about your experiences whilst in the early stages of labour. I very much regret that you felt your dignity was compromised and that you found the situation stressful. I have raised your concerns with the Maternity Unit even though your experiences relate to October 2009. If you would like to contact me at complaints@nbt.nhs.uk and I will happy to explore your concerns in more detail to allow the Maternity Unit to respond directly, but also to maximise learning from your experiences to help us improve the maternity services.

Kind regards – Steve Sykes
