His outpatient scan at West Suffolk hospital showed kidney cancer but he was not told for many weeks because new radiology software and no MDT coordinator in post meant the result slipped through the net. He only received any apology or frank explanation of the errors months later when we later made a complaint. No datix had been completed at the time of the error. We feel that Duty of candour guidelines were disregarded. His treatment required surgery so the hospital referred him to addenbrooke’s and this all took a few months (about 3 more MDT’s, a repeat scan due to age of original scan, lung function test and ecg) by which time his condition had deteriorated significantly. He had gone from having an occasional twinge of pain to being in constant pain. He suffered for months untreated and no medical professional took action to expedite his treatment nor show concern for how he suffered.
