My wife who had dementia had an 8yr stay at the Hazelhurst Unit in the Harplands Hospital for the mentally impaired. The staff were brilliant with her - they always had time for the patients and they also cared for the carers.
I feel it needs to remain exactly as it is as all these other services are shaken up. I remember that the staff never had a long face, they were always cheerful and it made a big difference to my wife and to me knowing I was leaving her in good hands. She was very well cared for. She had very complex needs, she was incontinent, was in a wheelchair and had severe dementia. All her needs were met - I have nothing but praise for the staff. They made sure that her physical problems were treated, and also made sure that she was happy and mentally healthy. I was so impressed. I hope nothing happens to this unit - I think very highly of it.
"Staff never had a long face!"
