My young teen was admitted with anorexia. The first couple of weeks were very difficult as she had been allocated a key nurse who was on leave and so nothing much seemed to happen and none of the staff seemed to be doing much to support us. My daughter and I became really anxious and distressed. It was a shocking experience particularly as she was the youngest on the unit and there were some very difficult behaviours that she witnessed from other young people. I felt desperate that she was there but she was too unwell to remain at home. Once her key nurse returned, things improved significantly. She was very tuned in to my daughter and her needs and has been amazing throughout. Whilst on the ward my daughter was also diagnosed with another issue that she was given support for and the bigger picture began to make more sense. She has had a five month stay and it's been up and down and not always ideal but that's due to the nature of the unit rather than the care which she received. It's a unit with young people who are distressed and in some cases very unwell, and you have to get over that, it's a tough job at the best of times for all concerned. On the whole the staff have been extremely supportive and kind, even at very difficult times. They are willing to discuss concerns face to face over the phone, any time day or night. I felt very involved in her care. She's not 'fixed' as that's a long and complicated process, however in the short - term I believe they have saved her life and given her some skills to help her get fully well. Thank you to everyone.
"Generally very pleased after a diffcult start"
