"Generally very pleased after a diffcult start"

My young teen was admitted with anorexia. The first couple of weeks were very difficult as she had been allocated a key nurse who was on leave and so nothing much seemed to happen and none of the staff seemed to be doing much to support us. My daughter and I became really anxious and distressed. It was a shocking experience particularly as she was the youngest on the unit and there were some very difficult behaviours that she witnessed from other young people. I felt desperate that she was there but she was too unwell to remain at home. Once her key nurse returned, things improved significantly. She was very tuned in to my daughter and her needs and has been amazing throughout. Whilst on the ward my daughter was also diagnosed with another issue that she was given support for and the bigger picture began to make more sense. She has had a five month stay and it's been up and down and not always ideal but that's due to the nature of the unit rather than the care which she received. It's a unit with young people who are distressed and in some cases very unwell, and you have to get over that, it's a tough job at the best of times for all concerned. On the whole the staff have been extremely supportive and kind, even at very difficult times. They are willing to discuss concerns face to face over the phone, any time day or night. I felt very involved in her care. She's not 'fixed' as that's a long and complicated process, however in the short - term I believe they have saved her life and given her some skills to help her get fully well. Thank you to everyone.

Thank for you for your description of your and your daughter's experience in our hospital. I hope that this will be helpful for other families and young people who might need to come into our mental health hospital in the future. I take note of the fact that you felt things were slow to start, and we will learn from this feedback.

I am very pleased to hear how supportive and helpful you have since found the staff and that your daughter has made good progress on her journey to recovery. The team at Chalkhill understand how hard it can be for the family of young people who need to be in hospital due to difficulties such as Anorexia.

We also appreciate the hard work that family members put in to help their child to overcome their difficulties - this is just as important as anything we do.

Kind regards,

Nik Mansfield (Matron for Chalkhill)
