"My ongoing undiagnosed health care problem"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Urology (Ward 11c)

(as the patient),

In April 2015 I was admitted to the Southern General hospital with an enlarged scrotum. Over 9 days doctors gave me IVantibiotics. I kept saying that they were not working. Every day my scrotum got larger to the point where I couldn’t walk and it had got to the size of a watermelon. Thankfully after 9 days a new doctor looked at the infected area and took me for surgery straight away. My scrotum was sliced in half to drain the poison and I had a further 2 operations over a 5 day period. I remained in hospital foe 19 days as the massive wound had to be internally packed. I left the hospital with no diagnosis.

Since April 15 I have been back in hospital 5/6 times with the same condition and alway needed surgery apart from March 17 as the wound burst just prior to surgery. Although I take antibiotics they don’t take the problem away. I have had a number of tests to find out the cause but was released from the specialist in the summer as they couldn’t find any underlying condition.

I presented myself to the Queen Elizabeth University hospital last Wednesday after trying antibiotics from home prescribed by my doctor. I was taken into a receiving ward and then moved to Urology at 1am. The surgeon done their rounds on Thursday morning where I felt they very roughly examined my scrotal area. The other doctor later said my face was looking in extreme pain with his examination.

Later I went for a scan of said area but they couldn’t see any abscesses. The doctor came to my room to tell me I was getting home as the surgeon couldn’t see where to drain my scrotum. I was quite distressed as I explained that antibiotics don’t work and I felt safer in the hospital as my history shows it is just going to continue to increase in size. I also said that it has increased in size at times to a level where I couldn’t wipe by bottom.

Since being released from the hospital my doctor couldn’t believe how I had been treated given my history and also that I was no longer under a specialist (because they couldn’t find a problem)

I have been bed bound since coming out of hospital apart from doctors appointments. I am in constant excruciating pain. I have a doctors appointment again tomorrow but may need to go to a different hospital.

I feel that this has put my life on hold for the past two and a half years. My job could be in jeapordy as I have so much time off in hospital and recovering with open wounds. No one is giving me answers as to why this is happening, what I can do to prevent it etc. Basically I’ve been told we don’t know why this keeps happening and it’s just one of those things you need to live with.

Can someone please help me as it is impacting on every area of my life.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
