"Better than I could ever have imagined."

About: Beaumont Hospital

What I liked

I was diagnosed as needing a total hip replacement and before I was offered the Choices I had mentally decided on Wrightington Hospital due to the fact that that was the place where hip replacement was born. Imagine my elation when I found that Beaumont Hospital was offered - two miles from my home - and one of the leading surgeons from Wrightington coming to me to perform the operation!

I saw the consultant at the hospital and had a very professional and well explained meeting, he told me that there would be a wait of around three months due to demand, this meant that Christmas would be out of the way, in late November I received a letter to tell me that my operation was due to be carried out the following week., due to a cancellation. I had a very professional and informative pre-op meeting and was cleared for surgery three days later.

I arrived at the hospital at 0730 on the Saturday morning, was booked in and shown to my room, the consultant came to see me followed by the anaesthetist and I was informed that I would go to theatre at 0800, I was prepared by the anaesthetist - having 'spinal anaesthetic' and sedation and the last I saw of the clock was 0855, I opened my eyes again at 1050 being taken into recovery room from where I was taken back to my room. The consultant and anaesthetist both called in to check on me. I felt very little pain from the operation and did not need strong pain relief. The following day I was allowed out of bed and into the chair, being checked at regular periods by the excellent nursing staff. On the Monday I was visited by a Physiotherapist and started walking along the corridor using a Zimmer, later in the day I had another visit from the consultant and the anaesthetist, the following day I was introduced to arm crutches and encouraged to use them, again along the corridor and in the room, Wednesday I saw another Physio who took me through the method of tackling stairs on the crutches – this achieved I was discharged in the afternoon.

What could be improved

Absolutel nothing!!!

Anything else?

The staff from all sections of this hospital are excellent - from reception onwards, the nursing staff are friendly and attentive, the doctor called in many times a day, the catering is first class with a menu choice for all meals - including Paul Heathcote recepies! Food/drinks are available at any time including for visitors if so required (at extra charge quite rightly) The cleaning staff come in each day and clean everything. It was the first time I have ever had to be admitted to hospital and was full of trepidation but from meeting the consultant and the Pre-admission nurse I went on the Saturday morning feeling no fear, in fact I had a good night's sleep which I never thought would happen prior to admission. I would just like to say a Big Thank You to the consultant, anaesthetist and all the staff, nurses and doctor at Beaumont for a perfect experience!AdmissionsHip replacementAttentiveCleanlinessDrinksFoodReceptionAnaesthetistsConsultantsDoctorsNursing staffCancellationsSurgerySurgeonsCorridorsAnaestheticsPhysiotherapists
