"Given me a sense of purpose"

About: Rampton Hospital / National High Secure Healthcare Service for Women

(as the patient),

The Sense of Community project on Topaz ward has made me feel I have a purpose to myself to get up out of bed and get motivated to get involved in it. I have valued that I have a purpose for myself to get involved with this Sense of Community and to keep me motivated.

The minority that are motivated to be involved have got a sense of achievement for themselves and will have a nice decorated ward. There have been difficult dynamics of the ward. We need materials to be able to complete projects. It has been a challenge to have different staff being craft motivated.

It would be nice to have more input from the Sense of Community leaders as we lack help and sense of direction sometimes.

Thank you for sharing with us your views of the Sense of Community project. I am delighted that you feel included and valued and that the project has enhanced your motivation to be involved in meaningful daily activities.

Understandably from time to time there will be difficult dynamics on Topaz whereby those who have been newly admitted patients and new staff join the community.

Thank you for advising us to seek support from the Sense of Community project leads so that more patients and staff experience a sense of achievement for themselves and the Ruby ward environment. We shall also seek yours and other patients’ advice on resources required to complete the Sense of Community projects especially ward décor.

Thank you

Annett

I am delighted to say that sense of community is a standing agenda on each ward within Women's Services and this has enabled more patients and staff to be motivated and proactively and positively involved in the project.

Some patients have reported in ward community and others have posted on the Care Opinion website that the project has enabled their mood and made feel relaxed and valued in their environment.

As you are aware Ruby ward’s Rubettes Garden won the trophy for presenting the best sense of community in the first phase of the project. In the second phase of the Project, all the women’s service received their certificates at their carol service on 18th December with Outstanding Achievement awards going to the leading ward in each of the five categories. The theme “ What Christmas means to me” was interpreted well and in a variety of ways. We continue to monitor whether the projects have made a difference to the ward and sense of community via the ward community meetings and the ward managers.

Thank you so much for all the hard work of both patients and staff in building and maintaining the sense of community, sense of being valued and sense of being involved in enabling each other’s recovery and/or well-being.
