"10 out of 10 Opthalmology!"

What I liked

My father in law attended the Opthalmology Department as an Outpatient and as a result had a Cataract Operation in one eye to keep him within legal limits for driving (he acts as a part time carer for a 94 year old cousin who has macular degeneration, taking him shopping etc!).

At nearly 91 years of age he was treated with respect and dignity by the doctors, did not have long waiting times for his appointments, received unfailing courtesy from the staff, and received clear instructions about his subsequent care.

What could be improved

It would have been helpful to have had a clear chart of the daily eyedrops he needed to put in over the 3 week post operation period. Older people (especially those on their own) get forgetful and sometimes cannot remember if they have carried out an action or not. A visual instruction is often better than a written one.

I drew one up for him showing the dates, the times, the quantities for the whole period, and all he had to do was cross through each one as he had completed it. I am glad to say he never missed a beat and his recovery was rapid and problem free.
