"Unsafe discharge of a dying patient and..."

About: Russells Hall Hospital

What I liked

My Father was admitted as an Emergency with heart problems and an infection but due to shortage of beds had an unsafe discharge actioned by Occupational Therapist.

He was dispatched to the Discharge ward and made to sit on a hard chair for 5 hours in the cold.

No Family were told to pick him up and we only found him when I arrived to an empty bed on C1 and was told where he was (which isn't even signposted in the hospital!!!!!!)

A dying man with Cancer that has spread to his spine should not have been subjected to this and he should never have been discharged.

He collapsed 3 days later and luckily PCT team found him on the floor and admitted him to a care home.

I wouldn't complain but this happened to my Mum 2 years earlier in the same hospital.

They took her in for one thing-She broke her hip in the Hospital which meant going on a different ward.

The Hospital lost her and was treated for the hip condition rather than the original condition so she never got out.

This is not care.

What could be improved

Basic Care and feeding needs .

Assessment of a patents needs if he is sent home to help him.

Anything else?

I have made a formal complaint to the Pals team and the management on C1-Nothing has been done and no response given which brings me to believe they dont care-it is a business run hospital that doesnt care, and doesn't care what people say and isn't willing to do anything about it.ComplaintsCancer and tumoursColdsDeath and dyingInfectionsEmergencyOpening hoursPatient careTemperatureBedsWardCancerManagementTherapists

We are sorry that you and your father did not have the experience both he and indeed we would expect.

The concerns you raised are being investigated by our complaints department and will contact you separately.
