About: Queen's Hospital, Burton Upon Trent

What I liked

MS department? were is this. I live not very far from Queens Burton but have been told I have to go to Nottingham to see a neurologist.

On Queens web site it gives the impression that you can attend this hospital for this illness, so why is it I attend Nottingham and only attend Burton occasionally to see one of the Neurologists understudy also there is no MS nurses at Burton Hospital.

What could be improved

Make the site more up to date say there is no MS staff at Burton and that you will have to travel further away.Nursing staff

Dr Javed Mahmood, Consultant Neurologist, replied: “I am very sorry to learn that the patient is not happy with the service that is on offer at Queen’s Hospital.

“It is usual in the first instance for our patients suspected of having MS to be seen and diagnosed at Queen’s Hospital.

“They are then referred to larger specialist centres, such as those in Nottingham, Stoke-on-Trent, Leicester or Birmingham if they need particular treatment, such as Interferon which we are not able to provide at Burton Hospital, or if their case is complex.

“We are part of the East Midlands Neurology Multi-Disciplinary Team, which is based at Nottingham University Hospital Trust and our Consultants attend weekly meetings to discuss cases with fellow professionals so we are very involved with the care given to our patients.

“We do have an MS specialist nurse who works with us through South Staffordshire Primary Care Trust and we also have a partnership with the Adult Ability Team to provide extra care for our MS patients.

“It is difficult to give this particular patient a full answer as I am not aware of all the details of the case. If the patient would like to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 01283 511511 extension 5284 (voicemail for out of hours calls) or email: pals@burtonh-tr.wmids.nhs.uk I would be happy to look further into the comments being made and talk directly to the patient.”

PALS can also be contacted via our public website:
