"Lovely staff but embarrassing experience"

About: Musgrove Park Hospital / Trauma & Orthopaedics

(as the patient),

In October I broke my leg and was taken to hospital.   I had my op the next morning.   I had to have a bedpan on the ward and a bed bath.   Both were given by a young man.   He was very pleasant but it was extremely embarrassing.   I also feel in this day and age the hospital could be laying itself open for a sexual complaint from a younger woman. You are very vulnerable in hospital and   when nurses are busy and patients are pressing buzzers you feel you have to take the help.   All the   nurses bar one, who I believe was from an agency and I found to be quite nasty,   were very pleasant   and one particularly went above and beyond on the day of my discharge. The nursing assistants I dealt with were really lovely and helpful except one who brought the meals round and who I found to be very rude and unhelpful. The lady next to me couldn't move much and the meal was put out of her reach.

Dear Loretta, I am really sorry to hear of your mixed experience on our wards. It is important for us to be able to look further into the parts of your stay that fell below our expectations of care. Can I ask that you contact our PALS team (details below) and provide us with a few more details so we can see what changes we can make?

In regard to the male nurse you mention, we do have a combination of both male and female nurses providing care on our wards and I was glad to read he was pleasant, but so sorry that it felt embarrassing. That is not what we would want. I hope that he did everything he could to minimise that embarrassment but if you think there was anything else that would have helped please let us know. We are always keen to learn how we can make these situations better for our patients.

Tel: 01823 343536
- Email: pals@tst.nhs.uk
- Write: PALS, Block 51, Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton TA1 5DA
- Text: 07721 539 118 (please begin your text with the word: PALS)
- Visit the PALS & Information Office, Block 51, which is located close to Blackdown House near Whitlocks Restaurant, between 8.30am and 4.30pm.

Update posted by Lorretta (the patient)

I left a message for Pals on their phone before filling in the Care form and spoke to someone in their office another day, who said she would get a sister from the ward to phone me but I heard no more. I have spoken to a number of women friends who all said they would not like a male nurse to perform those duties I mentioned. What further information do you require regarding my other staff comments?

Thank you for replying.

Loretta
