"Exemplary nursing care."

About: Wythenshawe Hospital

What I liked

My father was an inpatient for a month, during which time he became terminally ill. The nursing and medical care was always of a very high standard. The nurses established a good relationship with my father, despite his dementia, and he was always treated gently and with dignity. When he suddenly relapsed his designated nurses were genuinely saddened.

We kept a photo of my father and mother by his bedside, showing them both as a young couple. The nurses used this as a talking point with him and said that it helped them get to know him.

What could be improved

After he died (within an hour!) I was handed a bin bag to gather his belongings into. I mentioned this on the phone (mobile) to a relative as I was in some distress about it. A nurse overheard and offered to do this for me. I felt they should have offered in the first place.O

Anything else?

Overall I felt it was an extremely difficult job that had been very well done. The consultant took time to explain his opinion and recommended course of action. We did not feel anything more could, or should, have been done for my father during this last month of his life.DementiaDignityPatient careTelephoneConsultantsNursing staff
