"White Horse Birth Centre"

About: The Great Western Hospital / Maternity

On arrival I was taken to a room and left without knowing what was going to happen. By this point my contractions were strong and very painful. I was then given a very rough internal that caused me pain and discomfort which was obvious from my reaction however the midwife carried on and never once spoke to me or asked if I was okay. I was then told to go home and it was almost as if I was wasting their time.

I knew at this point I did not want to go back to the birth centre and wanted to go to the delivery suite however this request was denied without any reason why.

My experience was a horrible nightmare and it got worse. I was not informed of where I was or if I had progressed at all and my requests for additional pain relief were refused. I requested an epidural however this was also ignored and I was told I had to stay in the birth centre.

I was scared throughout the whole labour and I even asked my husband if I was going to die that’s how panicked I felt. I also found myself being nice to everyone despite this because I was scared of how much worse this nightmare could get.

I didn’t feel I was listened too and my pain seemed to be ignored despite asking for help because I was not coping.

I was left there for hours and then there seemed to be a mad panic and I was transferred to the delivery suite because apparently I was over the time limit.

The silver lining is that the delivery suite staff were amazing and treated me with dignity and respect from the moment I arrived. Hard to understand how the level of care can change from one corridor down. Everyone I encountered in the delivery suite cared and looked after me and made me feel safe. I knew I would be okay and that my baby and I were in safe hands.

I would never recommend the White Horse Birth Centre to friends / family and I hope no one has to go through what I did. I always wanted lots of children however after this experience I do not plan to have anymore.

I have also spoken to others about my experience and the sad thing is that others have experienced similar but have felt to low to complain or speak up.

Let’s hope things improve and thank you to the delivery suite staff for looking after my family and I so well, I am forever grateful.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience. We hope that you and your baby are both well. We are sorry to hear we did not meet your expectations and caused you distress. It is good that you were cared for well in the delivery suite, however this should have been the case from the moment you entered the Trust. We take concerns seriously and are keen to investigate and take action as appropriate. In order for us to do this, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service by emailing gwh.pals@nhs.net or calling 01793 604031 with full details of your concern.
