"Dislocated shoulder"

About: Grantham & District Hospital

I recently dislocated my shoulder and was unable to relocate it myself so went to A&E. Waited 2 hours in reception in absolute agony before being seen. Cannot fault the doctors and nurses at all, only issue is waiting times and people using A&E when they clearly do not need it. Did not manage to catch the name of the doctor who relocated my shoulder, but thanks a lot to the doctor who managed to pop it back in.

Please accept our apologies for your wait. It is incredibly frustrating to wait and even more difficult when in pain.

People attend A&E for lots of varied reasons and sometimes this does add to frustrations when you are waiting. Please be assured we always treat people in priority order. Triage is carried out for this very reason and you are given a triage category which determines the order in which patients are seen.

I hope this response goes some way to explaining the waiting system.

Many thanks for your positive comments regarding the care you received and apologies that you had to wait 2 hours for treatment. We will review our processes regarding pain control earlier in the patient journey.

You are probably aware that there is concern nationally about the way in which A&E departments are utilised by the public and the ways that this can be resolved, such as the public asking pharmacists for advice.

In addition we are increasing knowledge and the skill sets of some nursing staff in A&E so that patients with more minor injuries/conditions do not have to wait to see a doctor.
