"Excellent care"

About: Dorset County Hospital

What I liked

Was seen immediately on arrival in A/E by a Sister and a Doctor and was told both their names, so I knew who was looking after me. Felt very well cared for and safe. Environment very clean and staff appeared to work well together as a team. Staff polite, professional and kind towards myself and other patients whilst I was in the department. Pain relief given promptly and when not completely effective at relieving pain, stronger pain relief given promptly. Spent the night in the Observation Ward in A/E and again felt very well cared for. Consideration shown to patients by the nursing staff speaking in whispers where necessary - have never been in such a quiet ward area - not even another patient snoring! Bliss! Was warned by one of the nurses that I might need to be woken in the early hours to have my observations recorded - fair enough as I was there to be "observed" - but I appreciated being forewarned. Doctors that I saw in the morning were also very pleasant and introduced themselves. I was offered a couple of treatment options and felt involved and listened to. As I had left my car in town, on discharge, one of the nurses even took the trouble to find out the times of the buses into town for me so that I could collect my car. Overall, I was very impressed with everyone and everything in the A/E Department. Thank you all very much.

What could be improved

A minority of the relatives and patients with unrealistic expectations who, as usual, seem to think that because the NHS is "free" it's acceptable to be rude, aggressive, bullying and generally unpleasant towards hospital staff. It is not and it frightens patients who have to watch yobs squaring up to young female nurses although the staff all dealt calmly firmly and professionally with the potential situation. A burly and highly visible security guard would be good to see in such a situation. logo
