My mother was discharged from Hull Royal Infirmary recently after a partial hip replacement following a hip fracture.
From the day of discharge she was visited by the Hull Intermediate care team with a full and thorough assessment by District Nurse Deidre. The care support workers visited her twice a day. The occupational therapist Helen, and her technical assistant Neal, assessed her needs relating to safety and mobility in her own home straight away and very promptly installed various types of equipmant to help my mother.
The physiotherapist Debbie visited her 3 times a week, spending almost an hour with my mum teaching her various exercises to strenghten the muscle in her leg. I was struck by her kindness when she also took my mothe to the toilet during one of these sessions. Her patience was remarkable.
Lisa, one of the other district nurses, visited my mum yesterday and found that she was very poorly and arranged for her hospital admission under to the dept of elderly care very promptly. Thanks to Lisa who spent several hours with my mum until the admission was arranged, my mum is now recovering very well on Ward 80 at Hull Royal Infiirmary and we are hoping she comes back home soon to our care and the care and support of Hull Intermediate care team.
The dedication of all the staff on ward 90, Hull Royal infirmary including the team led by Mr Ramaswamy, her Orthopaedic Consultant, is something the Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS trust should be especially proud of. Their very skillful physiotherapist Neal and his assistant Glenda quickly got my mother mobilized and able to climb stairs so that she could come home. Sharon, the occupational therapist and her team also assessed my mother's needs by bringing her home for a very useful and productive home visit to be able to assess her in her own environment.
The holistic care that she received both by the hospital team and the Hull Intermediate care team has been excellent. It is a shame that the NHS is always criticisized and the funding cuts that it is continually subjected to but I wished to share this story of extreme dedication and high level of personal care and support shown by all staff involved in her care.
My mother also suffers from Alzheimer's Disease and great attention was paid to this disabilty as evidenced by the patience and prompting by all the staff who were very gentle with her. From the very first assessment on discharge by the District Nurse, Deidre, the social service needs were identified and a processs was set into motion.
We are all very proud and grateful to have been served by such lovely people and do wish the Govt. finds sufficient funding to help their limited resource but very valuable.
"Excellent care for my mother on discharge from hospital"
