"In short nothing at all about this..."

About: Pinderfields General Hospital

What I liked

In short nothing at all about this hospital. In the four days I was in hospital the number of times I saw any cleaning being done on the ward? Never, not once. The first night on the ward I went to try to get some sleep in the day room due to the continuous noise from a drunk patient that had been admitted and was wandering around the ward talking about football in a very loud voice keeping everyone awake, the response from the nursing staff? Nil, they did nothing. The curtains were drawn around my bed to discourage the drunk from bothering me and I was away from my bed in the day room for four hours in total. No one even noticed my absence, so much for checking on patients. The next day the night sister informed the day sister that I had had a "good night" but as I said no one even noticed my absence from the ward for four hours. The night nurse was too busy planning her social life with her friends on the ward phone !!

What could be improved

After my operation my fluid output (urine) was carefully monitored and entered upon a check sheet kept at the foot of my bed. This was a complete and utter waste of time as no record was kept of my INPUT of fluid ! No one ever asked me how many times my water jug had been filled or how many jugs of water I had drunk. Without the input being recorded the figures for out put were completley useless and a waste of time. Incidently in the four days I spent in the ward not one nurse ever inquired as to how I was feeling, not once. The only time my water jug was filled was by me asking a passing ward orderly, when I could catch their attention, hence I was trying to eek out my water supply for as long as possible when in fact I should I have since found out been drinking as much as possible !

Anything else?

The brief time I spent with the surgical staff , that which I can remember, they were absolutley marvelous ! All were very reassuring, friendly and helped me remain in a calm state of mind regarding my impending operation. I cannot speak too highly about them. Unfortunatley the after care on the ward was chalk to their cheese, bore no resemblance what so ever to the treatment I received up to and including my operation

My comments thus far are based upon what treatment I have been told I should have received, when I say told I refer to my wife a nurse of some 40yrs experience and my daughter who is also a trained ICU staff nurse. They were both horrified by the things I related to them, i.e. spilt urine bottles being mopped up with paper towel and that was all, no cleaning after with mop and bucket, this happened twice at the foot of my bed !

If this hospital was a vetinary establishment for treating animals I seriously would not leave my dog in there over night.
