"I had a knee replacement op on 7th Feb..."

About: Blackpool Victoria Hospital

What I liked

I had a knee replacement op on 7th Feb this year, although I arrived at 7.30 am I did not have my opo until 4pm. I was told I had to have en epidural which 'I wasnt too happy ab out but was told everyone else was having on (9 knee ops that day) After surgery I was in a lot of pain as they were testing a new pain relieve pump delivered directly into the knee, thos was in place of mprphone. As my pump did not work and fell out after 24 hours I was in great pain and only given paracetamol. I was constantly sick and couldnt eat a thing., The anesthetist was called who was very helpful and siad I was to be go]iven morphine hourly or as needed. This worked well until a change of sister who told me that it wasnt necessary and I would not find the benefit if I had it too often. The physio was barbaric especially one who hurt us and frightened us to death she had us all in tears. She was know to the staff as the physio terrorist!. I had a good result from this op and cant praise the rest of the staff enough especially night staff who were gave us time to talk about our worries and fears and were more helpful than physio. I had a doctor who did a good job on my knee and gave me a continuous stitch which didnt need taking out, I had no trouble at all with my wound and it has now almost disappeared, conpared with other patients who had clips and much more pain. I was home within 4 days and although in a lot of pain for several weeks I am now pain free and can walk for miles although it is still a bit difficult to come downstairs, going up no problem. I would recommend this surgeon and ward to anyone I meet.

What could be improved

Given a choice of anesthetic, not being kept waiting for so long before the op. Not having to be treated like a small child by an aggresive physiotherapist.

The night staff could have done with a lot more help.
