"A&E and Cedar Ward experiences"

About: St Peter's Hospital (Chertsey)

(as a relative),

My father suffered a stroke at home and was taken to ambulance at St Peters Hospital in Chertsey. Obviously this was a very scary and distressing event for our family. I went to A&E and was able to be with my father during his time in A&E which I am grateful for.

The department was very busy and this was distressing for me and dad but one nurse called Jess accompanied us throughout A&E and cared for dad. She explained everything that would happen and I cannot thank her enough.

My father was admitted to Cedar ward where things were calmer but the staff there were also very busy and noticeably short staffed. Sometimes my dad would have to wait a long time just to go to the toilet but I don’t blame the staff there because they worked very hard.

It was hard to get a clear picture of what the plan was for my dad after various conversations with different doctors on the ward. I think communication between staff could improve. On the ward there was one male nurse called Ian who was very professional and instantly built a relationship with my dad and our family.

Ian was very caring and attentive and took time to explain to us and dad what the plan was for the future. I want to thank everyone on Cedar ward and in A&E at St Peters who looked after Dad but I particularly want to thank nurse Ian and nurse Jess because I think they deserve to be recognised for their dedication.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences of A&E and Cedar Ward with us. We are really pleased to hear that, despite being busy and under obvious pressures, our nursing staff kept you informed and looked after your Dad so well. We will feed back your comments about improving internal communication and thank you for highlighting this. We will make sure the staff you mention are aware of your kind comments.
