"Goodbye OCD - Hello life!"

About: Inclusion Thurrock (Talking Therapies)

(as a service user),

OCD had taken over my life, making every day a struggle to function.  It has been part of my life since I was a kid and I could see no way out.  After my first session  I knew things were on the up.  I knew it was going to be a difficult time and the only real chance I had was CBT and ERT.

ERT is definitely no walk in the park and had me doing some horrendous tasks but I am so pleased I put myself through it and GOT myself through it - of course with the help of my brilliant counselor, Mike.  I wouldn't say I am completely better but now I have the tools to get myself through any trauma that might lay ahead.  I am so pleased to have my life back.  The only way is up!

Hi Raindrop

You are so right. ERP can be quite tough but then the compulsive rituals that keep people locked into their OCD can be even tougher eh!? As you have experienced OCD can and does sometimes lock people into an ever decreasing range of behaviours which effectively closes down their lives around them.

I'm so pleased you found an effective therapy that has now given you this sense of being free again and with control ( and understanding I think?) back within your grip.

Because OCD is a condition that people often struggle with for many years, finding the courage and the hope to take that first step and try to find help, is so difficult.

I know people reading this will take courage from your experience and honesty.

Raindrop, I often find myself wondering what it was that gets people to the place where they can push themselves to take that first step. To find support, to trust that it will help them, to have real hope that they can get back to their lives again.

I wonder if you can remember how you were able to find that courage to start changing? Whatever it was, its part of your strengths and your tools.

You mentioned that you have your tool kit now and are prepared to face any of life's challenges that may come along - good for you.

Thank you so much for sharing your story and from all the staff at Inclusion Thurrock, we wish you all the very best.

Paul
