"The treatment of my mother"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Acute assessment unit

(as a relative),

Earlier this year, in the space of 24 hours in this hospital my mother, a frail and elderly woman with a treatable urine infection who was still happily living independently in her own home, was transformed as a result of what we think was an entirely preventable fall in hospital (AAU), into a bed-ridden woman unable to do anything for herself. She was robbed of her independence, dignity, and any hope of a decent end to her life.

My mother was also in A&E, Wards A21 and B21 during this time.

Dear surveyor

I am very saddened to hear of your mothers and your family’s experience whilst in our care. This has obviously been a very upsetting and distressing time for you all. Please accept my most sincere apologies that this has been your experience.

The issues you have raised greatly concern me and is not the high standard of care and compassion we aim to deliver in Forth Valley to all of the patients and their families.

I would like the opportunity therefore to fully investigate all of your concerns so that we can share this with the staff and teams involved and importantly, learn from this experience. Can I please ask you to contact Pauline Marland on 01324 566523 or alternatively you can email her p.marland@nhs.net

Kindest regards

Michelle Higgins
