Anchor unit in Aberdeen is a very special environment where, like so many, I am a patient and have to visit regularly. Despite an initial difficult prognosis I was offered a new cancer research treatment which I received in 2008/09 for my cancer, stage 4 Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and Bone Marrow malignancy.
I continue with appointments at the the unit to keep track and a check of my health and the situation with my cancer. The staff at the Anchor unit help maintain a sense of hope and normality and are always so pleasant which helps with coping and living with a late stage cancer, as yet incurable.
Each appointment is fraught with ‘is it still good news today’, sometimes leaving with tears of relief for me and smiles for hubby. The treatment was harsh, along with other ongoing health problems to cope with but the chemo nurses are so professional and understanding.
Although my life has changed considerably and needed much adjustment, I have been able to enjoy an extended time with my family and grandchildren and friends; enjoy some new hobbies and have been to lovely places on holiday and hope to continue for as long as possible ‘chemo free’ to carry on ticking boxes on my bucket list, thanks to the dedicated work by the doctors and staff at this very special unit.
