"Felt like I was in a fish bowl"

About: University Hospital Ayr / Day Surgery

(as the patient),

I attended the day surgery unit to have a procedure to remove a tumour from my kidney. The staff at the unit from the receptionist, nurses, doctors, and theatre staff were all very caring, professionals and I thank them all.

I was allocated a bed for my care before and after surgery of which was adequate apart from the fact that this area is used as a thoroughfare for all staff to traipse through.

I came round from the anaesthetic approx 11. 25 and was discharged approx 3. 40. In that time doctors, domestics, nurses, theatre staff all passed by the end of my bed, some glanced my way ( human nature) others didn't look. I found this very disconcerting and felt like I was in a fish bowl. I don't know why this clinical area where patients are going through a period of recovery from an anaesthetic is used in such a way? Maybe a shortcut? Easier route to other clinical areas? Habit? Whatever the reason it's in my experience not very confidential and should be looked at by management.

Again my treatment was second to none from all staff.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear PGL,

Thank you so much for taking time to tell us about your experience in the Day Surgery Unit. I will make sure your comments are passed on to the management and the team.

I am glad you found your "treatment second to none", and it is heart warming to hear.

I also appreciate your comment about feeling like you were in a fish bowl.. I suspect that the design of this recovery area is to allow each recovering patient to be observed while they are 'coming round'. while you need to have an eye kept on you, you don't need a member of the team sitting by your side for the full time. Having said that, I will make sure this is flagged for consideration.

I hope you are recovering well,

Best wishes,

Eunice

Dear PGL,

I have spoken to Charge Nurse and they would like me to post this on their behalf:

I am sorry you felt this way about the ward. It is unfortunately a very busy place, particularly during the day. We have domestic staff who need to be in the ward they clean, make teas, porter patients and take specimens to the lab. Also theatre staff come through for patients and also come through with relevant information pass on relevant information to staff about our current patients. We have doctors and anaesthetists in and out seeing patients throughout the day. However, I am so glad you had a positive experience with your care and your treatment.

Kind regards,

Shirley

Charge Nurse
