"First birth"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital / Maternity

Mixed feelings on my experience. Went to the birthing unit 3 times with contractions only to bf given strong pain relief which stopped them so I was sent home. This was over 3 days. Looking back I feel if I had been given different pain relief my labour would have been shorter. I ended up having to have my baby on the labour ward due to my waters breaking.

I was dropped at the labour ward with contractions late at night, I was hooked up to a machine to check the babies heart beat etc. My husband was told he could go home to rest as I would be induced the next day. I was left alone in a room for over half hour in a lot of pain and out of reach of the button for help. I ended up calling out for help but no one could hear me. I was very distressed. Communication between the midwife and myself was pretty rubbish, I had to keep asking what was happening.

Thank you for your feedback,

Your experience sounds like it was really challenging for several reasons, the stop-start nature of your contractions, the timing of your baby's arrival and a lack of pain relief for the first half hour. There is an increase in demand for maternity services at the moment, but this absolutely does not account for poor communication or pain relief in the way you described and so we would really like to speak to you in person if you feel able to do so.

You can contact us on 01279 82 72 11 or email pals@pah.nhs.uk.
