"I have been visiting Lister Hospital..."

About: Lister Hospital

What could be improved

I have been visiting Lister Hospital every evening for the last couple of weeks. Due to my current situation with my health, I have found myself having to hold my breath each time I walk in and out of the hospital.

Patients and visitors ignore the non smoking signs and stand in groups across the doorway smoking.

Other hospitals have smoking zones, announcements and sensible measures to ensure smoking ban is enforced. I don't think it is appropriate for sick, pregnant, vulnerable people and children to be forced to inhale other people's smoke when attending the hospital. I haven't got an issue with smoking in general, people are used to the new laws now and it can be easily managed. logo

We do understand your concerns and it is an issue that we take very seriously. Whilst smoking is not allowed on hospital grounds, this is not a legal ban - which is something that maybe some do not appreciate. Smoking within our hospital buildings, which has been banned for many years, is the only part of our overall site covered by the new law.

We can - and do - request people not to smoke on our grounds - we have signs all around the entrance areas, from which bins have also been removed. Our staff do challenge people about what they're doing, asking them to stop or go off our site to smoke. Responses vary from the polite through to the downright aggressive. We do our best and will continue to challenge those who treat our sites with such disregard to our rules, but sadly we face many people who simply do what they want, rather than think of others.
