"Allowed to leave in very distressed and confused state"

About: Borders General Hospital / Medical Oncology

(as other),

My Partner was diagnosed with cancer from an intial CT scan and died 3 weeks later.

The care plan was awful, far too many processes & procedures which were unnecessary considering what seen at CT and subsequent MRI scans.

Consultant not seen until less than 48hrs pre dying. Extremely badly communicated meeting. Assumptions made, which were wrong. Allowed to leave BGH in very distressed and confused state.

Multi disciplinary meeting was advised to happen end of January. No feedback, no call, no information.

Only found out after, that this meeting did not happen until the day my partner died.

I have felt extremely let down by the BGH and left very distressed following events.

The local GP surgery were very good once back home and their district nursing kicked in.

There has been a review and I have met with Palliative Care consultant, which was good to discuss and stop this happening to anyone else in future. I have also completed a digital story as a training tool. I hope this is used as all staff need to realise how this felt.

Dear Moto65,

Thank you for sharing your experience. I have spoken to Judith Smith our Lead Clinician for Cancer Services who is not yet a responder for Care Opinion, who has asked me to share her response.

"I am sorry that your experience was so distressing at an already difficult time. As you mentioned we have had a meeting and discussions around your situation to ensure as far as possible that this does not happen again. I would like to thank you for taking time to share your experience with us as this helps us to improve our care for patients and families."

Can I extend my own sincere apologies that the care your partner received was not of the standard we all expect and assure you of our continued emphasis on improving the care we provide. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need to discuss this further.
