What I liked
My mum was admitted to hosptial in May 2010 via A&E and again in July 2010 via GP referral. She spent time on Brieley 6 and Firth 9. Mum's condition was quickly diagnosed and the medical, surgical and community teams worked hard, with care, compassion and respect to support both mum and our family. We found a team of truely dedicated staff, (in this I include all staff on the ward, nurses, domestic, doctors, and assistants), who showed genuine respect for their patients. As noted in previous comments, we found that the staff were open and honest and shared information in a sensitive way, working as a team. There were as flexible and as helpful as they could possibly be. We were additionally supported by a fabulous social worker, who arranged and explained all the home care services that mum could access.
We felt that the hospital never gave up, until there was absolutly nothing else that could be done. In early August Mum was transferred to the Macmillan Palative Care Unit where the same dedication and compassion was afforded to mum and to us. Sadly mum died recently, but I know that her last weeks were made as comfortable as they could be by the work of the hosptial. I should add that, like others who have commented, we have very different experiences from a hosptial in another authority and believe that NG is a beacon from which others could learn a great deal.
Our thanks to all who directly or in-directly cared for mum.
What could be improved
If you wanted me to be really picky I would say that maybe the patient food could be improved.
