"I took my daughter into the gp referral..."

About: Birmingham Children's Hospital

What I liked

I took my daughter into the gp referral unit. The staff were amazing, although the wait was long, my daughter's needs were looked after. She was given a syringe to measure her water intake with as she was dehydrated. All the staff were so friendly and although they were very busy and were dealing with some very, very sick children we felt that we were in the best place. My daughter was spoken to with kindness and understanding. It was quite a scary situation for both of us but we were dealt with with care and consideration. My daughter's antibiotics were changed and she has improved very, very quickly.

I was very worried about my daughter and that anxiety was dealt with understanding and the nurses dealt with Alice so well. Especially the triage nurse and the nurse who gave her calpol even though Alice was so scared of being sick.

Can't thank the team enough it was a busy Friday night and I was one scared bunny. It is terrible when you know your child isn't right.

What could be improved

Some sort of childminder for children of ill siblings as once the sick child is taken through to the cubicles some siblings were left unsupervised which created problems for other parents and disturbed the sick kids.

Could minor cases be referred to the walk in a Boots (child who had a smartie stuck up his nose), he waited three hours and it had melted?

Anything else?

Just thank you to the staff of Friday 13 August GP referral unit, 5.30 pm till 8.30 pm.
