About: West Cornwall Hospital (Penzance)

What I liked

kindness of the nurses on the ward

What could be improved

Somewhere for visitors/family to get food at 4am just a coffee machine that didn't work

Anything else?

My mother in law was admitted to this hospital by ambulance in the early hours of the morning. I made my own way there by car and had difficulty finding it. At first I thought the hospital was closed but the ambulance driver said they were taking Mum to the West Cornwall Hospital. I'm sure the man in the reception area was sleeping, he had the lights off and took ages to let me in the front doors. The only good point was the doctor who saw my mum he was very kind and put mum at ease, and took time to explain why Mum had been addmitted. I asked if there was somewhereIi could sit and wait while they sorted her out and found out the sitting room was occupied by a sleeping member of staff. Sadly this flagrant breaking of the rules was continued by two members of staff puffing away on cigarettes just outside the front doors when I went out to get Mum's stuff from the car. One was the receptionist the other a nurse who later helped my mum and she was stinking of cigarette smoke, it made me feel quite sick. I thought the NHS had a no smoking policy; we certainly do at our local hospital. I left feeling as if we had interrupted quite a few people sleeping on the job and concerned there was such a lack of respect for rules.
