"Seeing a Psychiatrist"

About: Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust / Primary care mental health Rotherham PCT / Primary care mental health service

(as the patient),

A few years ago I was referred to a psychiatrist for depression. On my first visit I was told I would be taped for training purposes and no-one would know it was me. It made me very anxious and I was told to go home and think about it.

On the second visit after many sleepless nights I agreed to being recorded. While in consultation a mobile went off which was answered. (I thought this very unprofessional)

On my third visit it came to switch the tape recorder on and it needed new batteries. The response was "oh we don't need it" which inwardly made me feel very upset that I had felt pressured to be taped and now suddenly it wasn't needed.

On my next visit no one turned up and I was not informed of a cancelation.

On my next visit, I was told after waiting 2 hours no one was available to see me.

This happened on three appointments altogether. As you can imagine each time I was going I was really anxious.

During my last consultation the mobile was answered again, by this time I had lost trust and respect, it was a shambles.

Just thought I would share this with you as I have never forgotten the experience and will never see a psychiatrist again.

I did go on to have Cognitive therapy at my GP's and it was excellent.

Dear Pod,

thank you for taking the time to offer your posting, which the Trust takes very seriously.

I am very sorry to hear about your experiences when seen by a member of staff for CBT. It would help if you could offer some further information regarding who saw you in order to forward your posting to the appropriate manager. Tape recording of sessions is sometimes necessary for training purposes, which can be daunting. However, it something that should always be done in a sensitive manner and with full agreement of the service user. Not agreeing to being taped should not prevent a service being offered.

I am pleased to hear that you were able to access CBT through your GP that has been helpful.

Should you have any further concerns please contact the Patient Advise and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0800 015 4334 or pals@rdash.nhs.uk.

Best Wishes,

Nick
