"Pharmacists substituting generics."

About: Merseyside

(as the patient),

My GP specifies on all my prescriptions the generic brand of a specific medication which does not cause side effects. Several pharmacists have told me that this brand of medication was only available for a few months each year and gave me substitutes which caused adverse side effects. I believed them, and knowing that it is essential that I take this medication I took the tablets regardless of what damage they may cause. I contacted brand that my doctor recommends and they told me their medication IS AVAILABLE ALL YEAR!

I changed pharmacies again and am now always given the brand specified by my GP. I believe that this practice of substitution of generics may be happening with other drugs at many pharmacists and people might be stopping taking their medication due to adverse side effects which are often due to the presence of different excipients in some of the cheap generics that are manufactured. I advise everyone who experiences adverse side effects to find the brand which suits you and insist that the pharmacist complies with your GP's request.
