"Staff exemplified patient-centred care."

About: University Hospital Monklands / Ophthalmology & Optometry

(as the patient),

I attended the Ophthalmology Department as an in patient with suspected acute bilateral Uveitis. At the time of attending this appointment I was generally unwell and had developed symptoms of bilateral eye pain, blurred and impaired vision and sensitivity/ intolerance to light.

The porter took me into the waiting area and within no time at all I was warmly greeted by a member of the nursing team, who introduced herself by leaning down to the chair and lightly placing her hand on my shoulder. Acknowledging how light sensitive I was she kindly reassured me that she would find somewhere more comfortable to wait to see the Consultant. She took me into a consulting room, put the lights off and offered me water. These all seem very simple acts of kindness but for someone experiencing visual problems for the first time and being unable to properly see was quite frightening. However, I felt the nursing staff were very attuned to this, and communicated with softly spoken words, full explanations, touch and overall sensitivity to my needs.

Prior to seeing the Consultant I was then cared for by the staff nurse Lesley who like all of the other nurses I met exemplified compassionate care. She was kind, knowledgeable and very understanding, explaining everything to me so that I was fully aware of what to expect. I felt extremely well cared for and have spoken very highly of the level of care I have received at the Ophthalmology Out Pt Department.

The nursing team and Dr Tzamos are testimony to the exceptional care that is given despite the pressures the NHS is currently experiencing. Even post discharge Ann, the secretary to Dr Tzamos was exceptionally helpful when I contacted her and without being asked communicated with my GP Practice to arrange a prescription and help organise my review appointment. This was beyond what I would have expected and was extremely grateful for her help and effort.

Working within the NHS myself I can testify that the Ophthalmology OP department, inclusive of all staff, exemplify patient centred care that is of a very high quality and extremely compassionate. Thank you.

Dear Antonia,

Thank you so much for sharing you experience of your Opthalmology Outpatient appointment at Monklands. It is heartening to learn that the team which cared for you that day, and subsequently, showed such compassion and helped make a difficult experience easier for you.

I will pass on your kind thanks to all involved and I hope that the treatment that you received has helped improve the issues with your sight as best as possible.

Kind Regards,

Cameron
