About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Cardiology Golden Jubilee National Hospital / Cardiac Surgery

(as the patient),

My journey began in December 2016 with a call to Dunblane Surgery for an emergency appointment due to a severe chest pain - and is due to enter its final phase soon, with bypass surgery at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital (GJNH).

The stages in that  journey have included an initial appointment with my own GP and referral to the Cardiac Unit at Forth Valley Royal Hospital (FVRH);  - a 999 telephone call and a resulting ambulance ride to A&E at FVRH;  - a consultation with the Cardiologist at FVRH, followed, three weeks later by a cardiology test and referral for an angiogram to GJNH; the said angiogram and a recommendation for bypass surgery;  – a consultation with the Cardiac Surgeon who will carry out the operation, followed by various pre-operative tests.

During my journey, I have been kept safe through a range of medications and the expertise of my own GP and those whom I have been fortunate to consult, including doctors and nursing staff.

For the skill and dedication of all those I have encountered on the way, I am grateful. I would, however, like to highlight those in key positions who contribute so much to the efficiency of the whole – namely the receptionists at Dunblane, FVRH and GJNH; the respondent to the 999 call, whose manner and words were so re-assuring; and the staff at the Booking Office and Schedulers at GJNH. They have been unfailingly courteous and professional.

We are so fortunate in having such a world-class National Health Service here in Scotland, staffed by such dedicated people.

Dear Orkney Boy

Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us. I was really pleased to hear that you have had a positive experience and I wish you well for your forthcoming surgery.

I was struck by the number and variety of different healthcare professionals you have met along the way and delighted that each one seems to have met the high standards that we strive for with all our patients, each and every time we see them. Although I am replying to you today from our hospital-based Cardiology service, I was especially pleased to see you mention members of the wider team including workers from General Practice, the Scottish Ambulance service and our NHS administration and clerical staff, all of whom make a huge impact of the care we are able to deliver.

I'll be sure to pass on your kind words to each of the teams you have mentioned. We look forward to continuing your care in Forth Valley following your surgery when I am sure you will be just as impressed with our cardiac rehab team!

With best wishes

To Dr Catherine Labinjoh

Thank you for your response. I was particularly impressed by your total care team - at the Clinical Assessment Unit; the nurses who carried out the treadmill test; the Staff Nurse who arranged the referral to the Golden Jubilee; and your colleague, Dr Jane Balfour. They were all impressively professional and exhibited excellent patient care.

For me, personally, they inspired confidence and that matters.

I look forward to,continuing my association with Cardiology at FVRH through the Rehab Team.

Best regards

'Orkney Boy'

Dear OrkneyBoy,

Thank you very much for taking the time to post. You certainly are on a journey and it’s so reassuring to hear that the interactions at every stage and with all different individuals have been so positive. Your story highlights excellently the amount of team work and multiple professions involved in providing care to patients in the NHS, both within and across hospitals. It’s reassuring to hear that this has worked so well for you.

I have shared your kind words with the teams involved here at Golden Jubilee all of whom are extremely grateful for your feedback and delighted to know that they have made a difference in your journey.

We wish you the very best for your forthcoming surgery and recovery.

Best wishes,

Laura

Thanks, Laura

Just back home from GJHT for the second time without surgery. Due in again in three days' time. The reason has been 'no beds available post-op in Intensive Care Unit'. This has brought home to me in a very real way, the immense pressures you are under in the Scottish NHS but also the extreme care you exhibit towards patient safety. To the Nursing Staff I have met in Ward 3 East on this leg of my journey 'THANKS'. You are 'gold', without exception.
