"One stop breast clinic- Wansbeck"

About: Wansbeck Hospital / Breast surgery

I attended Wansbeck one stop breast clinic today on August 3rd. My appointment was through the 2 week urgent referral scheme. Prior to the appointment I checked that this clinic conducted the scans, biopsies etc on the same day to give a diagnosis. I was pleased to hear that it did as I suffer from anxiety badly.

I arrived at my appointment with my mum for moral support. I was seen on time by the consultant who examined me and said I would need an ultrasound. They then told me that, with it being peak leave season, I would have to book another appointment for my ultrasound and not have any further investigation today. I was so shocked and explained that I specifically accepted the appointment as Wansbeck as I was assured it was a one stop clinic in which everything would be done in a day. They again explained there were no staff to do the scan. I then walked out the room and burst into tears as I was so anxious for my appointment and to be told I would not get any results today was so upsetting. My ultra sound was booked for 9 days from now with my follow up consultant appointment booked for the last day of this month!

At this point the lovely nurse who had accompanied me during the examination saw how upset I was and took me into another room. They listened to me as I explained about my anxiety and went back to see the consultant to tell them.

The Consultant kindly moved my consultation results meeting forward to then 17th of this month, which will be two weeks from today but I still feel that the appointment was misleading and unsatisfactory.

I still feel really upset and disappointed that an appointment was made for me at a 'one stop breast clinic' that was not delivering the services it claimed to.

If only the appointments system had shown that the clinic would not be operating fully, I wouldn't have chosen Wansbeck and would have travelled further to another breast clinic.

I feel the next two weeks worth of worrying are unfair when an appointment could have been made for me (and no doubt all the others who attended the clinic this morning) at a different breast clinic where everything would have been done in a day.

I have had previous breast issues in the past where I attended North Tyneside and the RVI 'one stop' breast clinics and have left really positive reviews. I hate to complain but the upset and anxiety caused has left me feeling that I must comment.

Dear Ms,

I am very sorry that you and your mum have experienced such an anxious wait for tests to be carried out. Please accept my apologises as I can only imagine how nervous and upsetting a time this must be for you.

Please be assured that we do absolutely everything we can to care for patients are quickly as possible as we understand delays such as these can be distressing.

It is comforting to read that the consultant who is looking after you was able to accommodate an earlier appointment for you but I agree the ‘one stop’ wording could be misleading especially during peak times. I will of course pass your comments to our senior team at Wansbeck to see what we can do to better communicate with and manage the expectations of our patients.

Thank you ever so much for taking the time to tell us about your experience and allowing us to look into this and make improvements. I hope your next appointment with us goes well and I wish you all the best.

Kind regards,

Jan
