"My brother's support and care"

About: Lakeside Unit / Kestrel Ward

(as a relative),

Vena was my brother's Primary care nurse. When he left, she shopped for him and bought toiletries for him to use in the home and fruit to snack on. While he was in hospital, I spoke to her several times on the phone because I live abroad and she was very kind. She put my mind at rest by giving me some details about my brother's progress. I would like to thank her for doing her job with her heart.

Dr Mehrotra made an excellent decision in changing my brother's medication from a depo injection to daily tablets, which became an option as he is now supervised for taking medication. He has turned a corner and so far is quite a different person on this new medication. It was a very, very good call.

Precious was my brother's OT. She also was very kind and patient and detailed and thorough in her efforts to identify his needs and motivate him to become more mobile.

Mr Smith is my brother's care coordinator. I would like to thank him too for his support and follow up of my brother's case and helping to finalize his transition from the hospital to long-term residential care.

Over the seven months that my brother was in Kestrel, the staff were consistently kind and helpful.

The one thing I hope can be improved is the system of liaison between hospital and police. (My brother has a court case as a result of his mental health issues. ) I have no criticism of either the police or the hospital staff, but the system was such that a loophole existed. When it appeared that my brother had the option of choosing to leave the hospital, the stipulations of the court required that the police had to come and collect him. The hospital did their best to request the police to wait, but the police were obliged by the court requirements to do so. I hope that there is some way to avoid this sort of problem in the future, as it did put my brother's recovery back for a while.

I definitely feel very good about my brother's care. I feel hugely relieved to know he is in the hands of professionals. I feel very grateful and appreciative that they do the job they do, which is very tiring and demanding.

Thank you very much for your positive feedback, it is always really helpful for us to hear what is going well and ensure staff that they receive this feedback. It increases moral and positivity in the workplace and in turn supports us to keep up our standards.

Thank you for your comments regarding the police and I thank you for your understanding. I have however raised this issue in our police liaison meeting and therefore raised the awareness of the importance of joint working.
