"Cochlear implant spares service"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Audiology

(as a parent/guardian),

Telephone to request replacement head piece and microphone tip for my daughter.

Made to feel that I was falsely asking for something that wasn't required and am constantly questioned about the validity of the request

Informed that head pieces are not normally issued which has left me anxious about what will happen the next time we have an issue

In having to immediately send via first class post any broken items I am left feeling as if I am either a liar or am asking for something my profoundly deaf daughter is not entitled to

Whilst appreciating the costly nature of cochlear implants, being made to feel like I am defrauding the NHS is very upsetting

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Ailsas,

I have spoken to the head of service for the Cochlear implant service and this is what she has told me on response to your post-

“I am sorry to hear that as a parent, you felt guilty when phoning to request spares for your child's speech processor. We replace broken/lost processors and issue spare parts on a routine basis. It is our policy to ensure that all cochlear implant recipients have access to fully functional equipment.

I acknowledge that cochlear implant equipment is expensive but no-one should ever be denied an essential spare part and I am sorry you found this to be a problem. I will look into this and post any update on this forum in due course.

With Kind Regards

Ms Allen"
