"I made my way to the outpatient’s..."

About: Lincoln County Hospital

What I liked

I made my way to the outpatient’s casualty department after severing an artery in my thump after a glass jug broke in my hand. I wrapped a tea towel around my hand and told the receptionist I had cut my hand badly and blood had spurted out of the wound and up the walls in my kitchen. I was told to take a seat and wait my turn in outpatients. Fortunately there was only two people in front of me so was seen after 20 minutes. The nurse called the doctor who stitched the wound both the nurse and doctor were first class. The doctor asked me how long I had been waiting and was concerned when I said 20 minutes. The triage was non existent.

What could be improved

Educate the reception staff to at least pass some admissions for immediate assessment.

Anything else?

The actual care and reassurance given by both doctor and nurse was excellent.

Thank you for leaving us your feedback - I am sorry that I am replying so late in the day but we have set up systems recently to respond to stories on Patient Opinion and decided it was still important to look back over older postings.

I am glad the staff, once you got to them looked after you so well but take your point in relation to a fast assessment. It would be difficult to bring receptionists into the assessment process but this is what the triage nurse should be doing and I am confident that this is what would happen now (though I sincerely hope you don't have to test this!). I am sorry you had to wait - with such a worrying wound I can imagine this would have added to your anxiety.

Thank you again for your feedback - even after such a long time it is still valuable to us.
