"Made a nasty experience a little more bearable"

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Accident & Emergency Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

One morning in March this year I very stupidly managed to get nail glue in my left eye instead of eye drops - gluing my eye shut with a contact lense inside. I attended A&E at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary where I was seen within half an hour by a Doctor. After a couple of hours I was then referred through to Opthalmology where I saw the Consultant on duty, Mr Bennett. I was very distressed and anxious as I wasn't sure of the extent of the damage to my eye - I feared I'd blinded myself! Mr Bennett and all of the nursing team showed me a lot of compassion and helped to calm me down. I attended Opthalmology every morning that week (the Wednesday to the Friday). The lady at reception was fantastic at moving things around and getting me an appointment with Mr Bennett every morning. I had a holiday booked to New York on the Sunday and once Mr Bennett advised me on the Friday I was not medically fit to fly due to my eye still being glued shut I was obviously very upset. The staff in the department were again second to none and I felt my privacy was very respected; given a private space when I needed it.

The next week I was back in to the department again and saw a different Consultant on the Tuesday (apologies I'm unsure of his name but he was also brilliant) where he cut my lashes and finally managed to open my eye and extract all of the glue and lense. Again the Consultant and Nurse on at the time were very caring and helped to keep me calm.

I also attended A&E and OOH about 4 times for pain relief where the staff were also very attentive and keen to help.

I got to New York the week after the whole incident and I just wanted to thank all of the staff at Opthalmology, A&E and OOH who made the nasty experience a little more bearable.
