"My daughters admittance and diagnosis"

About: Tameside General Hospital / General medicine

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter wasn't feeling herself for a period of time. Recently she became seriously ill, we took her to the A & E Department at the hospital. The experience we received from start to finish was amazing, from the way the lady dealt with us on the desk to the way my daughter was dealt with through to triage. I have no doubt in my mind that if the staff at TGH didn't act as quickly as they did my daughter wouldn't be here today.

Her treatment when she went through those doors and into that cubicle was amazing, she was hooked up to various fluids and diagnosed in a short time of examination and dealt with. The nurses on that department were efficient, sympathetic and understanding yet still showed a level of professionalism. I cannot thank them enough for what they did. My daughter was moved from a cubicle up onto the AMU where the care and attention carried on, these nurses are busy and rushed off their feet dealing with patients with various conditions yet are still able to maintain that level of professionalism.

My daughter has never spent a period of time in hospital on her own, yet on each visit she seemed although extremely poorly very relaxed and calm and I certainly think the caring nature of her nurses had a lot to do with that. She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes which is completely alien to not only her but us too, each nurse that check her took the time to explain her results from her checks and explain the levels that were in her blood at that time.

My daughter eventually ended up on the HDU on my visit the first thing that became apparent was how busy that department was yet still the nurses continued with their care and attention and made my daughter and myself and husband feel at ease because time was taken for explanations of why they were carrying out certain procedures with her.

As a final note on my daughters first admittance to the AMU unit it was a bit of a blur because the department was a busy one. One of TGH Doctors came to see my daughter with a very quick chat about her condition, we didn't really understand or process what was said as the last thing we expected was a diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes. My husband and I finished visiting at 8 o'clock one evening and we were sat in the foyer of the Hartshead Building upset chatting trying to make sense of the events of the day. It was now 11pm and the Doctor that had seen to my daughter was just walking through on her way home, she noticed us sitting there and took the time to come over to us. The first thing she did was apologise that she was so busy and didn't manage to speak to us regarding my daughters condition. She actually took time to stand and explain what had happened to my daughter, why it had happened and what would be happening next. We thanked her and off she went home to i'm assuming her family.

I have seen and heard many many bad reports regarding TGH but I have to say on this occasion a great big well done and thank you from the bottom of my husband and I's hearts for all you have done for our daughter. You are all extremely busy and probably very very tired but your professionalism and empathy shone through.
