"No IBD nurse - for 6 months"

About: Rotherham Hospital

Under gastro 14 months been seen by 3 different Drs no IBD nurse since January which is appalling when you've bowel disease. Gastro forget to send you follow up appointments had to chase Secretary then don't call back it's not very good gastro department needs a shake up and definitely needs a IBD nurse to care for patients who need support. Im considering moving to another hospital care is so bad. If I get a reply I'd like to know when you intend to replace IBD nurse? I asked the Dr just looked at me like it was a stupid question.

Hello my name is Samantha, I am really sorry that it has been necessary for you to raise your concerns with regard to the care you have received from our Gastroenterology Department. I would like to look into the issues raised in more detail, in order for me to do this please contact my Patient Experience Team on 01709 424461 in the first instance.

With regard to your question in relation to the post of an IBD Nurse I have shared your feedback with the responsible Head of Nursing and Matron in order to respond.

Dear Anonymous

The Matron for Integrated Medicine was extremely saddened to hear of your poor experience with regards to your care and treatment for your IBD and has explained that our IBD Specialist Nurse left on 12th February 2017 and we failed at that time to recruit a suitably qualified nurse to replace them. In May we seconded one of our experienced Endoscopy Staff Nurses into the post for a period of 6 Months. Who is managing the IBD helpline and working closely with our Consultants to rebuild the IBD service. We are also currently re-advertising the Senior IBD Nurse post and hope to attract a suitably experienced and qualified Nurse to lead the service. I hope that you now have some assurance that we are working hard to address this shortfall and should you wish to discuss your concerns please directly please contact the IBD helpline on 01709 424580.
