We were given an earlier date for my daughters surgery which gave us four days to prepare which we personally felt was great; the sooner the better we believed. We were told the Dr's and don't in regards to food and drink and attended the ward at 0730 to be waiting nearly 3hrs to be able to go onto the ward so my daughter could play. In that time she had no food or drink and kept asking for water. I asked twice if she could have some water and at 1100 they told us yes she can up until 1200... We saw the surgeon who was fantastic and the nurses were also lovely. By 1400 my daughter had the numbing cream and went to the anaesthetist at 1410 where she had to have gas rather than the Canula as the cream hadn't been on long enough... Despite being there since 0730 in the morning.
The surgery went well and I can't fault the sea or nurses. However; we went told a lot... I had a packed lunch and wasn't told I could put it in the fridge... What fridge? A beverage room? Where the toilets? We were told nothing. The lunch and dinner menu came around at 1000 and I put in a lunch request. I didn't know I could order a starters, main and dessert until the lady mentioned it. I didn't put in a dinner request as I didn't know it had to be done the same time! But again I wasn't told and was left to it.
My daughter was starving as she hadn't eaten for 24hrs and would puke up anything she tried throughout the night and morning. The pain management Dr asked if she had any anti-sickness to which she hadn't... Apparently it was the strawberries she ate although I believed it was the morphine and anti-sickness probably would have been better. When she came off the morphine she kept everything down.
We were originally told she would be in for 3 days, letter said 2 and we were home in 1. We were sat waiting all morning for anyone to tell us anything... Oh and all afternoon too... 1810 in the evening we were sent home.
Despite feeling like 'regulars' got better 'treatment' and not being shown around or told much, the Dr's and nurses were great and my daughter is recovering well. Her surgery was successful and hopefully she won't need another one.
