About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske)

Am struggling to understand after a short stay at Treliske, in the Medical Admissions, that there are no options available on the menu for either vegetarian or vegan food.

As I am Vegan not only by choice but am allergic to all dairy produce, I was presented with dry toast, dry potato and dry tuna.

I felt worse as I was so hungry and was rescued by my mom with some food from home.

Not everyone during their stay has this privilege. Rather disgusting seeing that more and more people are intolerant to dairy and also the amount of vegetarians these days as people choose to eat more healthy.

What are people to do, become ill from intolerant food or starve during their stay.

Time for Treliske to bring themselves up to date and recognise what people not only want, but actually need to eat whilst in hospital.

Hope my comments are passed on to the relevant people concerned with the running of the hospital for a better future and reputation of Treliske.

Dear Zark

Thank you for taking the time to give feedback about vegan (and food intolerance) menu choices following a recent stay on our Medical Admissions Unit (MAU).

I wanted to let you know that I have passed your comments to the Ward Sister and to our colleagues at Mitie so that they are aware of your experience, and the problems this caused you. I have asked for your comments to be considered and I will post any response as soon as it is received.

In the meantime, I hope that you are recovering well and thank you again for taking the time to give feedback with a view to improving patient experience for the future.

Kind regards

Julie Hughes, Patient and Family Experience Coordinator

Dear Zark

As promised, please find below a response from our colleagues at Mitie who have considered the concerns you kindly brought to our attention regarding lack of choice for vegans/special dietary requirements as an inpatient at the Royal Cornwall Hospital.

"On behalf of Mitie I apologise that your dietary needs were not met during your stay. We take very seriously that for patients to get better, good nutrition is needed. We also recognise that our offering for vegans is very limited and we are now in the process of creating a vegan menu with a wider choice to encourage patients to eat. This will hopefully be available to all patients within the next couple of months. We do have a restaurant chef on site who can make a number of dishes where suitable alternatives are not on the menu, and we will encourage our ward hosts who are always happy to help, in making this known to patients".

Dear Zark

Apologies for the delay in updating you but I wanted to ensure that you were assured that the Trust now has a vegan and 'free from' menu available. These meals are individually plated to ensure there is no cross-contamination. We have a photo of the menu card below.

With kind regards
