"A&E ."

About: Dewsbury & District Hospital / Accident and emergency

After being assessed by the emergency responder, and then the ambulance staff, it was decided that my mother would be brought to A&E at Dewsbury Hospital. Shortly after she arrived she was placed in a cubicle and booked in by the ambulance staff and then the lovely nurse took over. The nurse was very calm and patient with my mother, and did the observations needed to do at that time - BP, pulse, oxygen levels etc. Then it went down hill from there....we waited and waited. By this time the cubicles around were all filling up. I asked the nurse how long it would before we saw a doctor and they said there were 4 before us. Some time later, the nurse said there was just 1 before my mother would be seen. This begs then question, why we were we still sat waiting when everyone around us (who arrived after us) were either being seen or had already seen a doctor and left? I went to the desk and asked why and was told by the ward clerk we would be next. The ward clerk explained the doctor was reading the notes and was then unexpectedly called away to deal with a peadiatric case. The notes were then placed back in the box!!! How is this allowed to happen?!?! Minutes later, we were greated by a locum who said they had been passed the notes when they came on duty.

The doctor examined my mother and said the reason for the long delay was they were waiting for blood results!! No blood was taken, so how can they be waiting for results??? The doctor continued with the examination and gave us the diagnosis, then suggested we got our own GP to see my mother tomorrow. It turns out the A&E diagnosis was incorrect and that my mother had actually suffered a small stroke.

How is this diabolical service allowed to happen??? I suggest you go Pinderfields, they seem much more organised and you might get the correct diagnosis. I think I might write to Philip Dunne or Jeremy Hunt about the level of service provided at this hospital.

we would be pleased to arrange for this matter to be investigated if the family would like to contact us directly.
